Tis the Season
In our household, not only do we look forward to Christmas Eve and Christmas day, we have three birthdays and one anniversary to celebrate — all before Christmas. Now that my kids are all grown, I only get to have the youngest two (the twins) around to bake birthday cakes for as well as my two adorable grandkids. My oldest son lives in Florida so he only comes home at Christmas, and we celebrate his birthday then.
When I was working for the Cooperative Extension Service years ago, I rented our 4-H building to a young woman from out of town who came back to Portales every summer so her husband could work on his advanced degree. She wanted to teach cake decorating. I decided to take the class. My mother always made our birthday cakes so special and I wanted to be able to do that for my kids! I don’t think I’ve ever benefited so much from a class as I did from that one.
So, since that time I’ve baked and decorated birthday cakes for all three kids every year until my oldest son moved to Philadelphia to go to college. So, to me, December means cake decorating — as well as Christmas. It’s fun to look through photo albums (I’m also into scrapbooking) and reminisce about the birthday, the theme, the decorated cake, the party etc. Thank you Millie Ruth Rhoton for a wonderful class many years ago.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for 2011!
